Parent access to school

Parent access to school
Posted on 06/16/2020

I know that having access to your child’s belongings at the school is important to you. The school district has been working with Ottawa Public Health (OPH) to develop a plan to do this safely. The plan requires visitors to complete a self-screening assessment prior to entering the school. It also includes safety measures such as physical distancing, hand washing, use of face masks or coverings, time limits on access to the school, traffic flow inside the school and restrictions on the number of points of contact in the school.  These actions will help to reduce the risks of exposure to COVID-19 and limit the spread of the virus.

For those families who choose not to retrieve their personal belongings at this time, their belongings will be safely stored at the school until schools reopen to students during the 2020 - 2021 school year and can be retrieved then.

If you have more than one child in the school, we will arrange for you to pick up all student belongings at once. We ask that one parent will pick up student belongings, ideally without the student so as to minimize the amount of people entering the building.

Here is an overview of the pick-up plan:

     Dates for Parent Access:

9:00 to 12:00 noon – for those whose last name begins with A

12:00 noon to 3:00 – for those whose last name begins with B, C, D, E, F, G, or H

3:00 to 6:00 – for those whose last name begins with I, J, K, L, M, N, O or P

9:00 to 12:00 noon – for those whose last name begins with Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, or Z

*Anyone who is unable to come during their scheduled three-hour block on Wednesday or Thursday morning can come between 3:00 and 6:00 on Thursday, June 25th.

COVID-19 Self-Assessment - Before coming to the school on the day of your scheduled time, you must complete the You will be asked when you arrive if you passed the assessment or not.

Arrive for scheduled time - Please arrive during your scheduled time and follow the directions for the safe retrieval of your child’s personal belongings.

Return School Property - You must return textbooks, library books, instruments and any other school property during your scheduled time. Please note that at this time, students will NOT need to return loaned Chromebooks or wifi. These items will be returned at a later date.

Medication belonging to students will be returned to you by the office staff.

Report Cards – This morning, you may have received an email entitled “How to Access Your Child’s Report Card” from the Communications Dept. Please know that we hope to have a paper copy of your child’s report card on the day of your visit, so no need to worry if you are unable to access the document online.

Some things you can consider or do to prepare for your scheduled three-hour block:

Please speak with your child about what belongings they have at school. Consider things like indoor shoes, winter boots, coats, books, sports equipment, etc. If this is discussed in advance, it will limit the time you need to spend inside the building.

Please be reminded to limit the physical surfaces you touch during your visit. Access doors will be propped open and everything you will be retrieving will be in the hallway or in a locker, therefore reducing points of contact. The classrooms are now empty of student belongings and will not be accessible.

     Washrooms will not be accessible.

I would recommend not all coming at the beginning of your scheduled time so as to avoid line-ups. We will have 2-meter markers indicated outside the main door in the event that you have to wait to safely come in. Should it rain, we will have this occur in the small gym.

Although we will have volunteer staff supervising high-traffic areas, we do remind you to keep a safe distance (2 meters or more) in the event you find yourself close to another parent once inside the school.

Unless you have more than one child at our school, your time inside the building will be limited to 10-15 minutes.
