Principal's Message

My name is Brian Chiasson and it’s been my honour to serve as the proud Principal of Featherston Drive PS for the past four years. I am of Acadian descent, and I strongly believe that my personal and professional backgrounds contribute to the multiculturally-diverse fibre of our school. It is very much what defines us and we continue to work as a team to celebrate diversity in whatever form it may take.

Our school is busy and vibrant. We have an English stream program, as well as a Middle French Immersion program starting in Grade 4. We also have four ASD specialized program classes and a Grades 6-8 ELD (English Literacy Development) class. Now that Covid-19 safety protocols have relaxed a bit, we are slowly and cautiously getting back to more comfortable routines, offering a multitude of extra-curricular opportunities for our students: Student Council, Newspaper Club, Dungeons and Dragons, Rainbow Rangers, Coding Club, Jogging Club and intramural sports to name a few.

Members of our staff, in partnership with parent and community volunteers, work hard to ensure that ALL Featherston Flames have equitable access to authentic and innovative learning opportunities. Last year, teachers collaborated with a variety of invested partners, namely Scientists in Schools, MASC (Just Jamaal the Poet and producer/director Craig Conoley), Juno-nominated musician Craig Cardiff, and yoga instructor Diana Slenys. Thanks to growing parental and community involvement with our front yard gardening project, we now have an active Gardening Committee in place.  As a result of all of their hard work with our gardening initiative, our Flames were featured in Ottawa Magazine just this past June. This is just one example of how we at FDPS focus on activities that integrate student voice and promote positive mental health.

Recently we adopted a new student-designed mascot - the strong and resilient Blaze the Lion. We then gathered input from students, staff and parents for the creation of an identity-based mural in our front foyer. Blaze is of course a crucial component, and we hope that the mural showcases everything we are passionate about while making everyone feel welcome and safe.

At FDPS, we firmly believe that social and emotional well-being are directly connected to academic achievement. During the 2022-23 school year, this will remain an area of focus for us. Staff wellness initiatives like our Sustainable Happiness Journal Group and the reveal of our brand-new Oasis for students, promoting mindfulness and well-being in a tranquil space, will no doubt help keep us on the right track. Do drop by and see what we’re all about!
