Principal's Message

My name is Brian Chiasson, and I consider it a privilege to be a member of the Featherston Drive school community once again this year. I think we can all agree that the 2019-2020 school year was quite the roller coaster of events, especially with the COVID-19 schools shutdown. There’s also no doubt that all key stakeholders (students, staff members, parents and community partners) were significantly impacted. That being said, going through such challenging times together only strengthened our bond and made us stronger as a unit. We are more than ready to proceed with a new academic school year, ensuring that your child is safe, well-cared for, and equipped with the strong academic foundation and the learning skills they need to navigate future pathways.

At FDPS, we have adopted a Living School philosophy (the desire for a more positive and innovative school culture) that has been embraced by students and staff. Everyone in our building understands that being happy corresponds to improved academic achievement and well-being. Members of our diverse student population demonstrate genuine kindness towards one another. I see students of all ages treat their peers in our autism system classes with the utmost respect; this is a credit to our teachers who ensure meaningful, authentic experiences, within and among learning groups, are thoughtfully implemented. I see active student and staff participation in impactful initiatives such as the Environmental Club, Leadership Club, Diversity Club and Hackergals (just to name a few). These opportunities make explicit connections with current global awareness issues, and consequently enable our students to make responsible choices and decisions affecting the larger-scale population.

One of the greatest ways to support students in their academic and extra-curricular pursuits is through effective communication between the school and a student’s home. Do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, the Vice-Principal, or me, should you have any questions or concerns. We will communicate school-wide information to you through a variety of media such as School Messenger emails, website calendar updates, newsletters, Twitter (FDPS handle: @FeatherstonPS), and notices sent home in your child’s backpack.

We are proud to be Featherston Flames, and our flame will burn brighter than ever as we continue on our educational journey together in what promises to be a unique 2020-2021. I am confident we will continue to accomplish great things now that we are well-rested and fully recharged for the year ahead.

B. Chiasson
