Principal's Message

Serving as Principal of Featherston Drive Public School last year was an incredible privilege--one that came with significant challenges that I am proud to say we overcame as a whole school community. Going through such challenging times together only strengthened our bond and made us stronger as a unit.

This year, we welcome new Vice-Principal Nicola Powadiuk to the FDPS family. She comes to us with a remarkable skill set, combined with a genuine drive to make a difference in our students’ lives. We look forward to working together as a team in the spirit of collaboration, innovation and creativity for which our school is known.

In recent years, the world has witnessed case after case of hate crimes and violence against racialized and minoritized groups. Some of these incidents have hit close to home, and we realize that we must stand in solidarity to support those who have lost so much and sadly continue to be targeted. These disturbing events have motivated our staff and students to take a pause, to be thoughtful, and to start taking action. Despite the 2020-21 stay-at-home order, our students were able to participate in meaningful, authentic learning opportunities that enabled them to have a voice and collaborate on what they could do to make a difference. We know we have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are ready. This year, it is our hope to dive into this work as a collective--to help us frame a vision and establish a plan for action. Ultimately, it is our goal to make our school as safe, as warm, and as dynamic a space as possible. We don’t just want to say that FDPS is a place where everyone belongs and is valued - we want to live and breathe it.

At Featherston Drive PS we are the Flames. Our flame represents one of knowledge, serving as a beacon of warmth shining bright throughout our academic and extracurricular journeys. Last year, we launched a competition among our students to create a new mascot for the school, and Blaze the Lion was born. May he inspire our Flames to achieve their personal best as we start a new chapter in September.
